ZHYTNII 45 Drop
Zhytnii 45 is a special drop created for the 45th anniversary of Kyiv’s iconic Zhytnii Market for the NGO Museum Open For Repair, which works to reinterpret “uncomfortable” cultural heritage through the tools of contemporary art, and also to preserve, research, and promote cultural heritage, especially in times of war.
Zhytnii Market opened in 1980 — two years prior, archaeological remains of an ancient trading square dated to the 10th–13th centuries were discovered in the ground beneath it — meaning the market has been here for a thousand years. This connection to history and tradition was reflected by artist Iryna Perova in the market’s decor: she cast iron grilles with ancient images of mythical creatures, who fit perfectly into our concept. Unfortunately, the grilles are rather in shitty — literally — condition. In keeping with our own mission of preservation and revitalization, we turned these cutest beasts into stencils for prints, and they became honorable inhabitants of our bestiary. The collection is still available to order in runs of 20 pieces and up.
